The 21-year-old batsman was unbeaten on 169 off 243 balls when rain delayed play on Day 3 of the first Test against visiting team at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, Kandy.

Kumar Sangakkara was the first Sri Lankan batsman to achieve the feat in 2007 at Hobart. The legendary wicket-keeper batsman made 192 in the match.

At Kandy, Sri Lanka were bowled out for a paltry 117 in the first innings, but thanks to brilliant spells from Rangana Herath and debutant Lakshan Sandakan, Lanka bundled out Australia for 203 runs.

In their second innings, Lanka have gained a lead of 196 runs with four wickets remaining.
