Martial was a big money signing from French club AS Monaco in summer 2015 and since then has gone on to score nine goals in 30 appearances for United across all competitions.

There has been a recent dip in form for the Frenchman who although has sparkled occassionaly has managed to score a solitary goal in his last seven games.

According to a report in Manutd.com, Carrick said everybody has to understand Martial may not be the shining light in every match.

"We have to understand that sometimes he might not be that shining light and have days when it`s not quite happening for him and that`s understandable," Carrick stated.

He went on to add that Martial has already shown big improvement.

"But over time he`ll improve and I`ve seen a big improvement already in this short time. Hopefully, that trend will continue and he`ll get better and better."

Louis van Gaal`s side, who are fifth in the Premier League, six points behind the Champions League spots with 13 games left, travel to second-bottom Sunderland on Saturday.
