New Delhi: Government on Thursday said 415 obsolete and redundant laws have been repealed and 17 Acts were in various stages of being withdrawn.
Law Minister Salman Khurshid said 1382 laws had been identified redundant by a special commission set up by the government.
However, he said, the Finance Ministry had conveyed to the Law Ministry that over 700 laws pertained to various Appropriation Acts which needed to be retained. Khurshid said another nine Acts were under examination for repeal or amendment.
To a member`s query, Khurshid said 11 laws enacted during the British Rule were in use till recently and eight have been repealed. Three such vintage Acts were under examination of the Ministry for repeal or suitable amendments, he said.
In a written reply, Khurshid said that 199 Central Acts enacted up to 1912 were in existence.
He said the government had enacted the British Statutes (Repeal) Act, 2004, to repeal certain laws in so far as they apply in the country.
