Egyptian Christians `fear persecution under Islamists`
Christians are Egypt`s largest religious minority, but yet they don`t believe that any of the candidates, who are running for the post of President is really capable of protecting their community.
Cairo: Egyptian Christians are reportedly worried about their future with the country’s first Presidential elections drawing near.
The largest minority in Egypt fears that their situation in the country may go from bad to worse. Last May, a Coptic church in the country was set afire. Locals blamed Muslims in the neighborhood over the incident, following which in October, Christians protested the destruction of another church, which was mowed down by soldiers in armored vehicles.
“We see that in neighboring countries with Islamic leaders, Christians aren``t safe. So we``re concerned about getting an Islamist president too,” CBS News quoted a Christian, Margus, as saying. Egypt`s presidential elections scheduled for Wednesday have left the country`s Christians are deeply worried. Although they are Egypt`s largest religious minority, but yet they don`t believe that any of the candidates, who are running for the post of President, has them as priority, or is really capable of protecting their community.
A year and a half ago, thousands of Egyptians the joined in the call for democracy from Tahrir Square.
