New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Sunday condoled the demise of former Union minister NKP Salve, saying the country had lost a senior and distinguished leader who left a lasting imprint in different areas of public life.
In his message to the departed leader`s son Harish Salve, Singh wrote, "I was deeply grieved to hear of the sad demise".

Describing Salve as a veteran politician who served the country in different capacities over many decades, the Prime Minister recalled that the late leader had served with distinction in the Union Cabinet and held the important portfolio of Power.
"In his demise the country has lost a senior and distinguished leader who left a lasting imprint in different areas of public life," Singh said.

The Prime Minister noted that Salve was a man of varied interests and he made lasting contributions in the promotion of education in Maharashtra and sports in the country.
Salve worked hard to develop cricket in the country and was closely associated with the 1987 World Cup, which was held in the sub-continent, Singh wrote.
