Biting chill across North India
Biting chill and icy winds continued to trouble north India as temperatures remained below normal in most places across the region.
In the capital, the minimum temperature was recorded at 4.6 degree Celsius, which is three degrees below normal at this time of the season.
The maximum temperature also remained well below normal, the MeT office said.
The Weatherman has predicted similar weather conditions for Thursday. There was no respite for residents of Kashmir as mercury across the Valley remained below the freezing point for the third consecutive day on Wednesday.
In the summer capital Srinagar, the minimum temperature was recorded at minus 3.3 degrees Celsius, a decrease of 0.5 degrees from last night, a MeT official said.
Srinagar city yesterday recorded the maximum temperature of minus 1.0 degrees Celsius which was the coldest day in many years. North Kashmir`s Gulmarg resort recorded a low of minus 14.8 degrees Celsius, an increase of 1.4 degrees from last night.
In Pahalgam resort of south Kashmir, mercury touched a low of minus 10.7 degrees Celsius, the official said.
Residents of the Valley have been making extra efforts to keep themselves warm from the extreme weather using more woolens and burning small fires by roadsides to shield from the cold.
Water supply was severely affected as the chilling weather froze the supply pipes to houses. Meanwhile, mercury in Leh town of remote Ladakh region had plunged to an extreme minus 18.4 degrees Celsius while the minimum temperature in adjoining Kargil district was recorded at minus 17.4 degrees Celsius, the official said.
Cold wave conditions prevailed in Uttar Pradesh too despite a bright sunshine towards the afternoon providing some relief.
MeT office sources said that moderate to severe cold wave occurred at a few pockets over west Uttar Pradesh. The weather was mainly dry in the state. Night temperatures fell appreciably in Varanasi, Faizabad, Lucknow, Jhansi divisions. They were below normal in Jhansi, Agra, Moradabad, Meerut, Kanpur and Bareilly divisions, the sources said.
The lowest minimum temperature in the state was recorded at Agra at 1.2 Degree Celsius, they said adding cold wave conditions would continue at few places during the next 48 hours and fog would also occur at a few pockets over the state.
Mercury plunged in parts of Rajasthan with Churu being the coldest recording a night temperature of minus 0.2 degrees Celsius.
Pilani was the second coldest with a minimum of 1.9 degrees Celsius, according to met department here. Vanasthali, Sawaimadhopur, Jaipur and Bundi recorded a minimum of 2.2, 2.9, 4.1 and 4.5 degrees Celsius respectively, it said.
Other places in the state recorded night temperatures in the range of 5.5 degree Celsius to 8.8 degree Celsius.
A similar chill prevailed in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh with Amritsar remaining at sub-zero temperature.
Amritsar, which had yesterday recorded a low of minus 2
degree Celsius, registered a low of minus 0.4 degree Celsius
today, down four notches from the normal level, the MeT
department here said.
Patiala, too, experienced a cold night at 4.5 degree
Celsius while Ludhiana`s low settled at 5.6 degree Celsius.
Chandigarh recorded a low of five degree Celsius.
In Haryana, Hisar was the coldest place recording a minimum of 1.8 degree Celsius, down four notches, while Narnaul, too, recorded a similar minimum at 1.9 degree Celsius.
Rohtak and Bhiwani also experienced the chill recording
respective below normal minimums of 3.7 degree Celsius and 2
degree Celsius.
