Chennai: Wildlife Crime Control Bureau has sent 19 Indian star tortoises to Arignar Anna Zoological Park (AAZP) here for rehabilitation, after they were illegally exported from here and seized in Indonesia.
Indonesian wildlife authorities seized the rare species of tortoises illegally exported from India during November last and sent them back here last night, a WCCB release said. Going by the provisions of Convention of International Trade in Endangered Species of Fauna and Flora (CITES), the seized amphibians were sent to the quarantine enclosure of AAZP here. After a stipulated time, they will be released into the wild, it said. Indian star tortoise is a scheduled species under the Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 and also has been listed under Appendix II of CITES, it added.
