Agra: Bharatiya Janata Party president Nitin Gadkari said if his party was voted to power in Uttar Pradesh, the reservation for backward classes would be protected.
Talking to reporters in Agra, Gadkari said his party was opposed to minority reservation and would ensure reservation for backward castes is not reduced.
"BJP will never support reservation based on religion, because it is unconstitutional," Gadkari said on Saturday.
"I would like to assure the people of Uttar Pradesh that the reservation for backward castes will not be reduced even by one percent," he said. He also said that BJP was likely to win in the state.
"The undercurrent in Uttar Pradesh is in favour of BJP. If we get majority, I will not be surprised," he said.
Uttar Pradesh will vote for the fourth phase of its assembly polls Monday.
