New Delhi: Cold persisted in North India on Monday with temperatures falling below the normal range in many places across the region.
It was a chilly but pleasant morning for Delhiites as the minimum temperature inched up slightly to 7.3 degree Celsius.
The maximum temperature was recorded at 20.9 degrees Celsius which is one degree above normal at this time of the season. The minimum temperature, which was recorded at 7.3 degree Celsius, is two degrees higher than yesterday`s 5.3 degree Celsius, the MeT office said.
Delhiites have been experiencing pleasant weather for the past few days after reeling under intense cold wave conditions during the second and third weeks of this month.
Witnessing one of the harshest winters in decades, the Kashmir Valley experienced an extremely chilly night with a fall in the night temperature even as the remote town of Kargil recorded the lowest temperature of the season at minus 25 degrees.
The minimum temperature in Kargil town of Ladakh region slipped by nearly five degrees from yesterday to settle at minus 25.0 degrees Celsius.
This is the lowest temperature of the season anywhere in the Kashmir division beating the previous lowest of minus 23 degrees Celsius recorded in Kargil last week. The adjoining Leh town, also in Ladakh region, recorded its season`s lowest temperature with mercury there plunging to minus 23.4 degrees Celsius, a drop of 4.8 degrees from last night, the official said.
In Kashmir Valley, the minimum temperature across the region fell several degrees below freezing point even as Chillai Kalan, 40-days of harsh winter, came to end today.
In the famous Gulmarg skiing resort, in north Kashmir, the minimum temperature recorded a drop of more than a degree to settle at minus 12.5 degrees Celsius, the official said.
Cold was back in Rajasthan after a few days of respite with the mercury dipping in several places in the desert state.
Churu was the coldest with a night temperature of 1.9 degrees Celsius.
Vanasthali recorded a minimum of 3 degrees Celsius, while Sriganganagar had a low of 3.9 degrees Celsius. Pilani shivered at 4.4 degrees Celsius while Pink City Jaipur had a low of 5.5 degrees Celsius.
Bundi and Jodhpur recorded respective minimum temperatures at 6.8 and 7 degrees Celsius.
Chittorgarh had a low of 7.2 degrees Celsius, according to the MeT Department here.
Mercury in other cities settled in the range of 8 degrees Celsius to 12 degrees Celsius.
Cold conditions persisted in Punjab and Haryana today with the mercury dipping upto five notches below normal across the two states.
Temperature in Chandigarh settled at 5 degree Celsius, one degree below normal, the Met office here said.
In Punjab, the temperature at Jalandhar`s Adampur air base was today recorded at 0.4 degree Celsius, Amritsar at 2 degree Celsius while Ludhiana and Patiala had a low of 7.8 degree Celsius and 6.1 degree Celsius respectively.
Haryana, Hisar and Karnal recorded the lowest temperature of 3.2 degree Celsius each, 4 and 5 degrees below normal, respectively.
Ambala and Rohtak registered minimum of 7 degree Celsius and 4.6 degree Celsius.
The Met department in its forecast has said that days would remain sunny and dry, but it warned that ground frost may occur at isolated places in the two states.
