Taliban shot dead Afghan governor; 18 killed
An Afghan governor and at least 17 Taliban militants were killed in violence, authorities said on Sunday.
Maidan Shahar: An Afghan governor and at least 17 Taliban militants were killed in violence, authorities said on Sunday.
Unidentified gunmen shot dead the governor of Chak district in Wardak province 35 km west of capital city Kabul on Sunday, a local official said. "The Governor of Chak district, Mohammad Ismael Wafa, was on way to office this morning when unidentified armed men opened fire on his vehicle killing him on the spot and injuring his son," a spokesman for provincial administration Shahidullah Shahid told Xinhua.
Meantime, Zabihullah Mujahid, who claims to speak for the Taliban outfit in talks with media, via telephone from unknown location claimed responsibility for the attack, saying Taliban fighters carried out the attack.
The armed outfit which launched spring offensive in May 03 this year, has said anyone working for government and the NATO-led troops are legitimate target. In the meantime, 17 militants were killed by Afghan police, Army and NATO-led forces in different Afghan provinces in the past 24 hours till Sunday noon.
A huge quantity of weapons, including rocket propelled grenades, machine guns and pistols, were seized. Eighteen militants were arrested, the Interior Ministry said.
