Traffic lights to begin operation on Aug 3: Jammu
Jammu and Kashmir will have operational traffic lights by Aug 3 to regulate traffic systems and reduce jams, particularly during peak hours.
Jammu: The winter capital city of Jammu and Kashmir will have operational traffic lights by August 3 to regulate traffic systems and reduce jams, particularly during peak hours, officials said on Wednesday.
"Traffic lights will be operational in Jammu city by August 3 for better regulation of the traffic," Inspector General of Police (IGP), Traffic, Jammu and Kashmir, Muneer Khan told reporters here on Wednesday. In the first phase, ten Electric Traffic Signal Lights (ETSL) will be operational in the city, he said, adding as a trial measure, traffic situations at various junctions will be surveyed to fix the time accordingly for the signal.
Khan said no protected persons, minister or VIPs can jump the traffic signals. In this direction, Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), Armed and Law and order and ADGP, Security and IGPs have issued necessary instructions to escorts to stop at traffic lights, he said. Traffic lights have also been installed in Srinagar. It may be recalled that the installation of 30 traffic lights for better regulation of the traffic in Jammu winter capital city has been completed so far. The dead line for installation of traffic signal lights and subsequently making them functional was June 18.
Omax Company was given the project for installation of traffic signals in Jammu under the supervision of Jammu Municipal Corporation.
In the project, 60 junctions of Jammu will be covered for installing the signals in two phases. In the first phase signals were set up 30 places including Satwari Chowk, Gangyal, Green Belt, Gole Market, Bikram Chowk, Jewel, Panama Chowk, Narwal, KC Chowk, Shakuntla Chowk, Rehari, and Janipur besides other crossings of the city.
"Remaining 30 crossings will be taken up under second phase of the project in interior parts of the city," Senior Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Manmohan Singh said. These traffic signals will be supplied with adequate power and would direct the traffic movement round the clock, he said. PTI
