Andhra govt not reduced to minority, says Governor
AP Governor said Cong govt in the state has not been reduced to a minority and there is no need for it to prove its majority in the assembly.
New Delhi: The Andhra Pradesh governor on Monday said the Congress government in the state has not been reduced to a minority and there is no need for it to prove its majority in the assembly even as the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) said it planned to move a no-confidence motion.
Governor ESL Narasimhan, who met union Home Minister P. Chidambaram in the national capital, told reporters that there is no reason for him to direct the government to seek vote of confidence.
The resignations of the legislators were yet to be accepted by the speaker, he said, to queries about the resignations of three Congress legislators, who joined the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) on Sunday. The speaker has also not yet taken a decision on the resignations of 26 legislators of the ruling party loyal to YSR Congress party chief YS Jaganmohan Reddy.
On paper, the ruling party has 172 legislators in the 294-member assembly. However, if the resignations of 29 MLAs legislators is accepted, it may be reduced to a minority.
While the government claimed that it faces no threat, the main opposition TDP said it would move a no-confidence motion against the government.
Leader of Opposition and TDP chief N Chandrababu Naidu told reporters at Guntur that his party would take a decision on a no-confidence motion after discussions with the party leaders. He said TDP needs no suggestion from any party on the issue. "We know what to do and when to do," he said.
Naidu alleged that the government has lost the moral right to continue in power and said the no-confidence motion would be on people`s issue.
Earlier, TDP leader from Telangana E Dayakar Rao said the party would move a no-confidence motion against the government.
State Congress chief Botsa Satyanarayana, however, said the government faced no crisis.
Claiming that the government has the majority, Finance Minister Anam Ramnarayan Reddy said it was ready to prove the same on the floor of the house.
