According to a report in Bild newspaper, the Mercedes driver leapt into action two weeks ago after spotting a distressed 5-year-old at sea while playing with his daughter on a pier.

A fully clothed Rosberg, a strong swimmer and past triathlon competitor, jumped into the sea and dragged the youngster to shore, the report added.

Like a true hero, the German also reportedly declined to comment, but his management confirmed the incident.

The 30-year-old is competing in the Bahrain GP, and is leading his team-mate and defending champion Lewis Hamilton in the championships.

Rosberg is winner of the last four Grands Prix.
