Road mishaps in Delhi left over 2000 dead in 2011
Over 2,000 people were killed in road accidents in the national capital last year with police Thursday claiming that they have the lowest number of fatal accidents in the past seven years.
New Delhi: Over 2,000 people were killed in road accidents in the national capital last year with police today claiming that they have the lowest number of fatal accidents in the past seven years.
According to Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Satyendra Garg, the year 2011 registered the lowest number of fatal accident and number of those killed in such incidents since 2005.
"The capital has witnessed creditable decline in fatal accidents for second consecutive year. Accidents came down from 2,104 in 2010 to 2,007 last year. This is over the decline registered in 2010 when accidents came down compared to 2272 in 2009," Garg said.
Number of persons killed came down to 2066 in 2011 compared to 2153 in 2010, he said. He said almost all types of vehicles like commercial vehicles, cars, two-wheelers had less fatal accidents in 2011 except for DTC, Grameen Sewa and autorickshaws.
"Accidents went up under three heads only: DTC, Grameen Sewa and TSRs all of which need corrective measures to check incidents of accidents. While fleet of DTC has gone up, still their drivers have to be disciplined.
"Grameen sewa need drastic improvements in detailed route for each vehicle, halting points and we have to curb sharing and overloading of autos," he said. While accidents by DTC buses went up from 51 (2010) to 82 in 2011, accidents by grameen sewa vehicles rose to 21 from virtually nil accidents in 2010. Autorickshaw related accidents went up from 20 to 32.
He also credited his team for "effectively checking" the plying of commercial vehicles which resulted in the "drastic reduction" in accidents from 820 in 2010 to 726 in 2011.
