Berlin: German Olympic Committee (DOSB) president Alfons Hoermann believes his country`s generosity to refugees from war-torn Syria could help Hamburg`s bid to host the 2024 Olympic Games.

"I`m firmly convinced that the image of a tolerant Germany will be viewed positively," Hoermann told Bild newspaper in an interview published on Saturday.

"The welcoming culture towards the refugees links perfectly with the culture of welcoming a global sports festival such as the Olympic and Paralympic Games."

However, Hoermann admitted things can change quickly, not least given the protests of far-right groups in Heidenau last month against the influx of refugees.

Hamburg officially announced its candidature earlier this week, although it will depend on a public referendum in the city on November 29.
