Patiala: A Sikh youth allegedly committed suicide apparently in support of Babbar Khalsa militant Balwant Singh Rajoana, a claim denied by the police.
The deceased had been identified as Ranjit Singh Chaudhary of Ghula Cheeka town in neighbouring Haryana. Police found a suicide note from the site where the body was recovered. The note allegedly said that he gave his life by hanging himself in the Tafajalpura locality near local bus stand last night and that he was part of a 21-member group formed to save Rajoana. Police also recovered some posters form the site, sources said.
Patiala SSP Gurpreet Singh Gill, however, denied that the youth committed suicide in support of clemency to Rajoana and said that though they had recovered the suicide note from the site, Chaudhary had been under depression for quite some time. He said that his father Jagir Singh met him along with his other son and told the true story to him in which they have explained that he was under depression.
The SSP told media today that Ranjit Singh went to UK on study visa and got married there. He divorced his wife and returned here last year and his marriage was again fixed for January 18 this year without informing the family of bride that Chaudhary was married and got divorced.
On January 18, the parents of bride came to know about the fact and both the families decided to marry the girl with his younger brother resulting in his extreme step, the senior police official claimed.
