TN to spend Rs 130 crore to restore five reservoir
As part of efforts to make adequate quantity of water available to the people in Chennai city, TN govt today allocated Rs 130 crore to deepen and restore five existing reservoirs.
Chennai: As part of efforts to make adequate
quantity of water available to the people in Chennai city,
Tamil Nadu government today allocated Rs 130 crore to deepen
and restore five existing reservoirs to store an additional
568 million cubic feet water.
The four reservoirs in Sholavaram, Porur, Ayanambakkam and
Nemam would be deepened, while Sembarambakkam lake would be
restored to store the rain water, which hitherto goes unused
to the sea, an official release said.
The water storage capacities of Nemam reservoir would be
increased to 577 million cubic feet at a cost of Rs 79.50
crore, Ayanambakkam reservoir to 314 million cubic feet at
Rs 30 crore, Porur reservoir to 70 million cubic feet at Rs 20
crore and Sembarambakkam lake would be increased to 1,080
million cubic feet at Rs 50 lakh, it said.
Water bodies at Poondi, Red Hills, Sembarambakkam and
Sholavaram are used to store water from Veeranam reservoir and
Krishna river and used when scarcity surfaces.
