New Delhi: Dismissing reports of clubbing of next year`s assembly polls in five states as baseless and misleading, the Election Commission has clarified that there is no consideration or thinking as yet regarding timing of the polls in these states.

"Never in recent days, any deliberation on the matter has been taken up by the Commission. As such, reports and references as mentioned above are completely baseless and misleading," a Commission statement said.
Noting that general elections to the five Legislative Assemblies of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Manipur and Goa are due in 2012, the Commission said it is engaged in its usual preparatory activities for quite some time in respect of these upcoming polls.

The Election Commission proposes another round of visit to these States in the first half of November to assess the ground situation and poll preparedness. It has already conducted one round of visit of its officials to these States in August 2011. The preparedness aspects are being followed up through normal official channels and through discussions with stakeholders, an EC statement stated.

The Commission is currently engaged in monitoring of Summary Revision of electoral rolls in all the States and Union Territories, including a systematic campaign for enrolment of newly eligible youth, it said, adding that a vigorous programme of training for election officials is on.
