SC grants 3 weeks to Centre on Green Tribunal row
The Supreme Court took on record the Centre`s undertaking to provide within 3 weeks sufficient accommodations for the National Green Tribunal members.
New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday took on record the Centre`s undertaking to provide within three weeks sufficient accommodations for the National Green Tribunal members and fill up its various vacant posts.
A bench of justices G S Singhvi and S J Mukhopadhaya expressed displeasure at the government`s perceived inaction in providing sufficient accommodation to the Tribunal and various other quasi judicial bodies.
"Our observations will create complications for the government. We are expressing our views that the Government seems to be not serious on the issue," said the bench.
The court warned the government that it may have to pass an order for restoring the appellate tribunal for environmental issues if the government failed to keep up its assurances.
Additional Solicitor General P P Malhotra, however, gave an assurance to comply with the direction and sought three weeks time which was conceded by the bench.
On the last hearing, the apex court had pulled up the Centre for not providing residential accommodation for the members of different tribunals in the national capital and directed it to take immediate steps for the purpose.
Taking strong exception to the Centre`s failure to provide accommodation to the judicial and administrative members of different quasi-judicial bodies including green tribunal, the apex court said it would ask them to resign if residences were not provided to them.
"Even the drivers of the Supreme Court and the high court judges are getting two-room accommodations. You have two options. Either the government should volunteer to provide the accommodation or we will pass the order and would ask them (members of the tribunal) to resign," the apex court had said.
