Ranchi: Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar on Thursday said efforts should be made to send every girl child to school.
Expressing disappointment at disinterest of some parents in sending girls to schools, she said one of the major factors keeping them out of school was poverty. Another reason was lack of amenities like proper sanitation in schools, she said at Ranchi University`s 26th convocation here.
Kumar said steps should be taken to provide equal educational opportunities to children belonging to ST, SC, OBC and minorities.
"We have made considerable progress in strengthening our economic system, but our education system has failed to fulfil the aspirations and expectations of the youth. "There should be efforts in utilising the vast human resource through development of skilled education among other steps," she said.
"We have to take the whole society on the path of education and progress. No section should be allowed to lag behind."
She said art, sculpture and artistic work should be recognised by setting up a university and to start with independent wings should be established in varsities for this. PTI
