Bahraini forces fire tear gas at protesters
Hundreds of opposition supporters have been detained and tried on anti-state crimes.
Manama: Security forces in Bahrain have fired
tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse anti-government
protesters demanding greater rights for the Gulf kingdom`s
Shiite majority.
Witnesses say hundreds of protesters took to the streets of predominantly Shiite villages around the Bahraini capital Manama today. They were chanting slogans against the country`s Sunni monarchy.
There were no immediate reports of injuries. Security forces have clashed with protesters almost daily since authorities launched a punishing crackdown on dissent in March. More than 30 people have died since February when protests began in Bahrain, inspired by other Arab uprisings. Hundreds of opposition supporters have been detained and tried on anti-state crimes.
