Sania enjoyed the most sensational run, clinching nine titles -- including two Grand Slams last year with Swiss great Martina Hingis.

The exceptional performance propelled her to the top of the WTA doubles rankings.

Earlier this year, the Indo-Swiss pair captured the Australian Open as well.

Their record-breaking streak ended at 41 matches at the Qatar Open in February.

Other women athletes to be honoured this year included Saina Nehwal and Deepika Kumari.

While Nehwal was conferred with Padma Bhushan, Deepika was awarded with Padma Shri.
