The world number one has not played since her losing to Roberta Vinci at the US Open last month. The semi-final defeat to the Italian ended her her bid to complete a calendar grand slam.

Then, she pulled out of two events in China earlier this month, as well as the season ending WTA Finals in Singapore, citing the need for a proper rest after a grueling year.

In an impressive year for the 34-year-old American claimed three Grand Slam singles titles, increasing her count to 21, which is two behind Steffi Graf's Open Era record of 22, and third on the all-time list behind Margaret Court's 24.

Her win-loss record for 2015 stands at 53-3, and will finish the year as world number for the fifth time, for a total of 263 weeks, sitting third all-time behind Graf and Martina Navratilova.

Last year, she teamed up with big-serving John Isner to make the finals in Perth, but they were beaten by Poland in the final.
