Chennai rain: Light showers expected; Schools remain shut in Kanchipuram and Thiruvallur on Monday

CHENNAI: Light showers will continue in parts of Tamil Nadu on Monday with the Meteorological department predicting a decreasing trend in Rains over the next few days. Schools and colleges continued to remain shut in Kanchipuram and Thiruvallur owning to incessant rains and water-logging.

Light spells of rains are expected in many places over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry while heavy rains have been forecast in one or two places in south Tamil Nadu, the Cauvery delta region and Puducherry, said SB Thampi, Deputy Director General of Meteorology, Regional Meteorological Centre on Sunday.

By 8:30 am on Monday, the India Meteorological Department or IMD weather station in Meenambakkam reported receiving 20.1 mm rainfall, while an independent weather station in Madipakkam received 36.3 mm rain.

“The waning Low Pressure Trough in Southwest Bay of Bengal off Srilankan coast would give some final parting showers Today and Tomorrow to North coastal districts inc. Chennai & Pondicherry. Another Low Pressure Trough with embedded Cyclonic circulation is hovering over Maldive-­Lakshadweep area. This would result in Heavy Thunderstorms in Kerala and scattered showers in some parts of Southern districts,” reported the KEA weather site.

Traffic came to a standstill in Chennai, as the city reeled under water-logging.

Coimbatore  – Cloudy sky with moderate rain possibility

Trichy –  Cloudy sky with moderate rain

Madurai – Cloudy sky with moderate rain 

Special rescue and relief teams have been formed even as dams and reservoirs were being monitored to prevent anti- social elements from creating problems, the government had said in a statement yesterday.

At least 12 people have reportedly died in rain-related incidents across the state last week.
