DMK General Secretary K Anbazhagan said that the General Council, originally slated on December 20 under its President M Karunanidhi, will now be held next month.

The General Council was earlier scheduled on December 20 amidst an increasing chorus from Stalin's supporters for his elevation.

Stalin, also leader of the opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, was expected to be appointed working president of the party in the General Council, the powerful decision-making body of DMK.

However, the meet was deferred following Karunanidhi's hospitalisation due to lung and throat infection.
Karunanidhi was discharged from the private hospital on December 23.
