The counting for the Amethi Assembly Election 2017 will begin at 8 am on Saturday. The high-profile constituency went to polls on February 23 in the fifth phase of high-voltage Uttar Pradesh Assembly Elections 2017. The Gandhi bastion was swept by the Samajwadi Party in 2012, the year which saw Akhilesh Yadav donning the UP CM hat.

The high-profile constituency went to polls on February 23 in the fifth phase of high-voltage Uttar Pradesh Assembly Elections 2017. The Gandhi bastion was swept by the Samajwadi Party in 2012, the year which saw Akhilesh Yadav donning the UP CM hat.
Amethi comprises a total number of 2,96,160 registered voters. It comprises 1,56,740 male and 1,39,420 female registered voters.
Rape accused Gayatri Prasad Prajapati won Amethi constituency by defeating Congress leader Ameeta Sinh by 8,760 votes.

Gayatri Prajapati embroiled in rape case
Notably, Gayatri Prajapati is a senior Samajwadi Party leader close to both Mulayam Singh Yadav and Akhilesh Yadav and is the party candidate from Amethi.

A woman has alleged that Prajapati had raped her when she met him three years ago. She alleged that she was raped when she fell unconscious after taking tea laced with a sedative. Prajapati took some photos of the victim and then threatened to make them public and continued to rape her for two years.
On February 17, the apex court had asked Uttar Pradesh Police to register an FIR against Prajapati.
As Akhilesh went twice to campaign for him, opposition leaders have been targeting the Chief Minister, and even Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his campaigning took potshots at the state government on the issue.
