As per the latest trends, the BJP is winning in Gauriganj nagar palika in Amethi and the Congress is at the fourth spot.

The sorry defeat for the Congress is a huge setback to the image of party vice president Rahul Gandhi at a time when speculations are rife that he may soon take charge of the party as the national president.

Reacting to the trends, BJP leader Smriti Irani said that the loss for Congress in Amethi denotes that people have no support for Rahul Gandhi.

Polling was held for 16 nagar nigams, 198 nagar palika parishads and 438 nagar panchayats with an average turnout of all the three phases estimated at 52.5 per cent of the 3.32 crore voters.

The overall percentage recorded an improvement from 46.2 per cent in 2012 to 52.5 per cent this time.

With the elections being regarded as the first test for the ruling BJP government, the party had no intentions of leaving anything to chance. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath travelled across the state to woo voters in the name of development.
