A similar incident had taken place in June last year in Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh where a man allegedly chopped off his wife's nose. The incident took place when a panchayat had gathered to resolve a dowry dispute between the couple. Enraged, the accused cut his wife Priyanka's nose after she could not meet his demands for dowry. An FIR was filed and the accused was arrested.

The woman had alleged that her husband was demanding Rs 50,000 in cash and a gold chain from her parents for dowry. The accused worked as a vegetable vendor in Rasoolabad area of Kanpur Dehat. The panchayat had been organised after a fight broke out between the two.

In another incident, an alcoholic husband had allegedly assaulted his wife and tried to cut off her nose in a fit of rage.
