Hyderabad, Aug 25: The heavy rain and flash floods in Andhra Pradesh during the last 48 hours has claimed 95 lives so far, besides causing extensive damage to crops and property. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, who made an aerial survey of the affected areas on Thursday, appealed to all opposition parties to cooperate with the government in its efforts to provide succour to the victims of Nature's fury.
The all-party meeting convened by Naidu to brief them about the steps being taken by the government to cope with the situation was, however, marred when the representatives of the Congress and the CPM walked out when the government did not agree to their request to postpone the meeting by an hour. They sought the postponement in view of the ''Bijlee Bandh'' call given by them on Thursday between 1900 hrs and 2000 hrs, protesting against the power tariff hike in the State. He said no estimate of the losses was being made immediately as priority was being given to relief and rescue operations. A report would be submitted to the Centre on the losses later, he said. In the afternoon, Naidu had also visited Nandyal town which received 50 cm rainfall in the last 48 hours as against the normal average annual rainfall of 65 cm. He said that all the reservoirs in the State were full, except the two main ones, Nagarjunsagar and Srisailam, which had a shortfall of 300 TMC. Paddy crop in 30,000 acres were destroyed in West Godavari district alone. - UNI
