In a major setback to outlawed Peoples' War Group (PWG), 29 of its activists, including five women, surrendered before police even as a TDP member was gunned down by naxals in Andhra Pradesh since Tuesday. The 29 ultras, hailing from Warangal, Adilabad and Karimnagar districts, surrendered before the Director General of Police (DGP) H J Dora on Wednesday.
Presenting the naxals before media, the DGP said most of them were illiterate with no ideology as they had joined the movement due to their local problems and unemployment.
Among them, a district committee member from Warangal carried a reward of Rs three lakh while two others, deputy commanders of peoples guerilla army in Adilabad and Karimnagar districts, carried rewards of Rs 50,000 each, Dora told reporters. Of the five women, one was deputy commander of Nelnar Dalam and area committee member of Kokamitta in Warangal district, while two others, one each from Warangal and Karimnagar districts, carried rewards of Rs 20,000 each, he said.
Meanwhile, a Telugu Desam Party member was gunned down at Tirayani Mandal headquarters in Adilabad district on Tuesday.
Police said here today that three armed naxals, belonging to Mangi local guerrilla squad, were hiding near the house of Hanumandla Mallaiah, the TDP member, and opened fire at him as soon as he came out of his house.
