New Delhi, Aug 31: The Centre has constituted the 16th Law Commission of India under the chairmanship of Justice (Retd.) B. P. Jeevan Reddy for a period of three years with effect from Sept 1. The term of the 15th commission under Justice Jeevan Reddy, a former Supreme Court judge, expires on Thursday. Dr N. M. Ghatate, a member of the outgoing commission, has been appointed as a member of the 16th Law Commission as well. He is a senior advocate connected with the International Society of Law, an official release said here. Besides the chairman, the Commission would have three full-time members and a member secretary. Member Secretary T. K. Vishwanathan, who belongs to the Indian Legal Service, is ex-officio secretary to the Commission. The Commission would also have three or more part-time members or consultants, whose appointment will be announced later along with the appointment of two full-time members. The 16th Law Commission has comprehensive terms of reference including review and repeal of obsolete laws, taking measures to harness law and the legal process for poverty alleviation, review of the judicial administration to ensure elimination of delays and simplification of procedure and examination of existing laws in terms of the Directive Principles of State Policy. Besides, the Commission would revise the Central Acts and suggest their simplification and consider any matter referred by the Government.
