Colombo (Sri Lanka), Aug 29: Lanka President Chandrika Kumaratunga will not attend public rallies due to security constraints. Instead, Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayake will attend all rallies on her behalf. Kumaratunga will attend district conferences of her Sri Lankan Freedom Party (SLFP), the main constituent of the ruling Peoples' Alliance, party General Secretary D.M. Jayaratne was quoted by the local media as saying. The President has already attended two meetings of her party workers in Kegalle and Matara in the south last week. She is to attend five more such meetings. During the last presidential election, Kumaratunga escaped an assassination attempt but lost her right eye, when a suicide bomber struck after an election rally in Town Hall. In June last, a suicide bomber at a rally near Colombo killed one senior cabinet minister C V Goonaratane. —UNI
