Massive fire at Kolkata`s Burabazaar: Flames not doused even after 12 hours, 30 fire tenders on spot
Fire department officials said the fire intensified due to the presence of inflammable material, including plastic and gas cylinders
Kolkata: At least 30 fire tenders continue to douse the flames in Kolkata's Burrabazar area that broke out on Monday evening even as the blaze could not be brought under the control till Tuesday morning.
Yesterday, a massive fire broke out at a multi-storied building housing several godowns in the commercial hub Burrabazar area in central Kolkata.
The fire was first noticed at 9.30 pm at a plastic warehouse on the ground floor of 3, Amratala Lane. However, there was no report of any casualty or injury.
Early today, the fire tenders to douse the flames at Burabazaar's wholesale market were increased to 30. According to latest inpurs, the fire was not completely doused.
The fire intensified due to the presence of inflammable material, including plastic and gas cylinders in the godown, a senior official of the fire department said.
"There is no report of any casualty so far and a few persons who were trapped inside the building have been rescued," the official said, adding people living in the adjacent buildings were also evacuated fearing the building might collapse.
"It is a massive fire and we are trying to douse it, but the thick smoke is making it difficult for us to reach the spot since the building is located in a congested area behind Burrabazar police station. The blaze is also spreading fast due to the presence of inflammable materials," he said.
State Fire Service Minister Sovan Chatterjee, who rushed to the spot, said, "We are trying hard to douse the fire and several steps have been taken to prevent the fire from spreading in the adjoining areas. Our senior officers are here."
The disaster management team and Kolkata Police are also at the spot to control the situation.
