Porsche 718 Cayman, Boxster India launch on Feb 15
Both mid-engined sports cars are powered by a 2.0-litre, turbocharged four-cylinder engine.
It’s official! Porsche will finally launch the 718 Cayman and Boxster in India on February 15, 2017. The cars arrive in India just over a year since the 718 Boxster made its global debut. That said, while this is the first official announcement of the launch, bookings and deliveries of both models have already begun. As it stands, the 718 Boxster starts at a price of Rs 84.72 lakh, while the 718 Cayman has been priced at Rs 80.86 lakh (both prices ex-showroom Mumbai).
Compared to their predecessors, the cars feature a retuned chassis, wider front and side air intakes, and revised side skirts. The twins also feature a 918 Spyder-styled steering wheel, new LED taillights and bi-Xenon headlamps with integrated LED DRLs, while full-LED headlights are available as an option.
Trivia: The cars have been named after the Porsche 718. It was the successor to the Porsche 550 Spyder back in the 1950s and was powered by a 4-cylinder engine. The 718’s accolades include three first place finishes from 1959-1960 at the Italian Targa Florio race in Sicily. Apart from the heritage connection, the new 2-doors, like the 718, employ 4-cylinder engines too.
The mid-engined, rear-wheel–drive sports cars are propelled by a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine that makes 300PS of power and 380Nm of torque. This smaller motor replaces the old 3.4-litre, six-cylinder unit. While a six-speed manual gearbox comes as standard in markets overseas, the India-spec 718s are expected to get the seven-speed dual-clutch ‘PDK’ automatic gearbox only. Both cars have a claimed 0-100kmph time of 5.1 seconds with the top speed rated at 275kmph.
We also have a confirmation that the higher performance-spec 718 Boxster S/718 Cayman S, which get a 2.5-litre engine (350PS/420Nm), will be given a miss for now.
