Ganga water for holy bath, mineral water for quenching thirst and mobile phones for chatting -- the Kumbh too has undergone changes keeping pace with the time.
Bhajans and enlightening debates on the sprawling sands under a night sky and drinking of holy water of the Sangam have become a thing of the past.
Now sadhus are seen travelling in cars talking on cell phones as devotees, including foreigners, spoke of tremendous changes that have taken place with the passage of time.
A regular visitor to Kumbh fares since 1940s, G Pandey from Varanasi says earlier there was small crowd, little security and no foreigners.
Now pilgrims inch their way to the Sangam rubbing shoulders with security personnel and struggle for their turns for ritual bath in the little barricaded space, he says.
“Innumerable bulbs that lit the area reminds one of Deepawali and chopper flying overheads cause ripple in the hearts of simple village folks,” He says.
