Amidst indications by the Centre that Manipur might be brought under president`s rule, the Nipamacha Singh ministry in the state, facing internal dissension, has recommended to the governor summoning of the Assembly on December 22 to discuss a no-confidence motion moved by opposition parties.
The decision to recommend convening of the assembly session was taken at an emergency meeting of the state cabinet at Chief Minister W Nipamacha Singh`s office late Monday night, official sources said in Imphal.

Nipamacha Singh and forest minister Gangmumei Kamei, in a joint letter to speaker, S Dhananjoy Singh, on December 15 had urged him to fix the date for discussion of the no-confidence motion against the ULF government as per constitutional provisions. The speaker, after admitting the motion on December one, the first day of the winter session, had adjourned the house sine die and later announced he would convene the house within 45 days. Union home minister L K Advani had indicated to reporters in Silvassa last Saturday that Manipur may come under spell of president`s rule in the wake of raging political crisis in the state. The crisis was set off by the speaker`s sharp attack on the performance of the Nipamacha Singh government. The Speaker was backed by opposition BJP and some other parties.

Meanwhile, the Deputy CM L C Singh, visiting New Delhi said that President`s rule had been imposed on the State several times earlier but had been of no use. He further said that a programme had been chalked out by the ministry to bring the law and order situation under control. Bureau Report
