China has engaged 110,000 of its troops into large-scale exercises off the country's eastern seaboard, part of efforts to hone the military for high-tech wars of the future. Artillery, anti-aircraft, communication, engineering, infantry and armoured units were among troops taking part in the sea-based exercises stretching from eastern Jiangsu province on the yellow sea to the east china sea off Fujian, a southeastern province facing Taiwan. Troops practised beach landings, as well as attacks and counter-attacks, airborne landings and defence against ground landings. The state feels such exercises are necessary to win future local conflicts under high-tech conditions. China is working to modernise its 2.5 million-member military, the world's largest, in part with purchases of aircraft, ships submarines and other equipment from Russia. Report : Zeenext Bureau
