Senior Hurriyat leader and Chairman of JKLF Yaseen Malik faced angry protests when he made some remarks about alleged "excesses" committed by security personnel in Jammu and Kashmir at a function at the Delhi University. Malik, delivering a lecture on "Kashmir: 1947-2000", on Wednesday alleged security forces had been committing "excesses" in Jammu and Kashmir and that the firing on protestors in Anantnag following disappearance of five youths was an example of this. He alleged the Amnesty International was being prevented form carrying out investigation into the massacres that have taken place in the state. This evoked an angry reaction from students of Delhi University Students Union who shouted slogans against Pakistan and Malik. They demanded an unqualified apology for his remarks against the government.
Later, Malik said Vajpayee's offer of ceasefire was a "bold initiative" but "peace could not be created in vacuum" and what was needed was "sincere" efforts by New Delhi. The JKLF chief said the people of the state had spent 11 years in anticipation of peace and hoped that this time the issue would solved for once and for all. The function was organised by Progressive Students' Union. Bureau Report
