Mumbai: Akshay Kumar took to Twitter Monday morning to unveil a brand new poster of his upcoming film Padman inspired by Arunachalam Muruganantham, a Padma Shri awardee, who played a pivotal role in creating awareness about menstrual hygiene in rural India.
In the poster, we can see a gleeful Akshay wearing a white vest holding cotton fibre in his hands in the backdrop of a factory producing sanitary pads.
Check it out here:
Padman written and directed by R Balki of the Cheeni Kum and Paa fame, also stars Sonam Kapoor and Radhika Apte. Legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan will make a special appearance in the film.
This film based on a noble initiative, marks Twinkle Khanna’s (Akshay’s wife) debut as a film producer. Interestingly, Twinkle had written about Padman aka Arunachalam in short story titled The Sanitary Man from A Scared Land in her second novel The Legend of Lakshmi Prasad.
During an interview with BBC, Twinkle while talking about menstruation and the taboo attached to it worldwide said that it took her a lot of time to convince Arunachalam to give her his consent for making the film. It was only after repeated requests, the man, who keeps low key, agreed to give his nod.
Talking about the project, the debutante film producer, during another interview said, “It's a wonderful project. It's a film which will bring awareness about something which has so far been cloaked and shamed and I am very happy to be a part of the film (sic).”
The film is slated to release on January 26, 2018.
