New Delhi, May 29: Amid the furore over some American states proposing to ban outsourcing, Karnataka today said that business process outsourcing industry in the state has grown by about 275 per cent last year. "Companies are still coming and no legislation is holding them," state IT & tourism minister D B Inamdar said at a press conference here.

In fact, the BPO industry in the state has grown by about 275 per cent and, at present, about three international companies are coming to Bangalore every fortnight against the earlier average of one in a week, he said.

The state is also planning to start an aptitude test for screening candidates for the BPO industry.

The government would be setting a standard for testing and training of candidates to provide a large pool of human resources to the BPO companies, he said.

Karnataka is also in the process of finalising the 104 square km IT corridor project in Bangalore where the IT companies would be housed, he said, adding, the basic facilities would be provided by the government and rest would be taken care of by the companies.

Jeurong Town Consultancy International, a consultancy firm for the project, has submitted its report outlining the contours of the project to the state government.

Inamdar said the state would host the sixth edition of Bangalore IT.Com 2003, Asia`s largest international information and communication technology exhibition between November 1-5 this year.

About 350 companies and 22-25 countries are expected to participate in the event which would have conferences on BPO, e-security and mentoring.
