Beijing, Aug 08: China is ready to participate in the post-war reconstruction of Iraq and has called for effective participation of the United Nations to find a proper settlement of the issue, a senior official said today. Stressing that the legitimate interests of various countries in Iraq should be guaranteed, state councillor Tang Jiaxuan said the Chinese government attached great importance to Iraq and was ready to undertake a positive role in the economic reconstruction of the country.

The most pressing task at present was to resume Iraq's stability and normal order, which was the concern of the international community including China, the official media quoted Tang, who suggested a five-point proposal on the reconstruction of post-war Iraq, as saying.

During a meeting with the chairman of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), Jalal al-Talabani, who is also member of the Iraqi governing council yesterday, tang said effective UN participation was conducive to the proper settlement of the Iraqi issue. Hoping that a new "universally representative" Iraqi regime would be established as soon as possible, tang said "the political will and choice of the Iraqi people should be fully respected".

The recent establishment of the Iraqi governing council was an important step towards "Iraqi people running Iraq", and China hoped it would be able to shoulder the mission of running the country and creating a good life for the Iraqi people, Tang told al-Talabani.
