Guwahati, Oct 30: Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today demanded that the Centre take initiatives, including political and military, to drive out militants from Bhutan who were using it as a safe haven.

"I want the central government to conduct operations in Bhutan or whatever initiatives it takes military, political to destroy insurgent camps there and seal the borders with Bhutan along Assam," Gogoi told reporters here. Pointing out that Thimpu's cooperation was needed, he said, "I cannot take the initiative with Bhutan government on the issue. Only the Centre can take up the matter with that country". The chief minister also asserted that protection of the international border was the primary responsibility of the Centre and such boundaries should be manned by dedicated forces. "There is no dedicated force on the Bhutan border, no fencing or border roads there. The militants use the porous Bhutan as a safe haven, commit crimes in Assam and then return to their camps there," he added.

"If there is cross border terrorism then who is to be blamed? Unlike the importance the Centre accords to cross border terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir, it does not talk about such activities in the North-east region", Gogoi said. He had urged the Centre to deploy BSF along the Bhutan border where NDFB ultras massacred 22 people on Sunday, Gogoi said, adding, it recently withdrew 26 companies of para military forces from the border leaving behind 121 companies only.
