Washington, Nov 25: The Pentagon has confirmed
the release of 20 prisoners detained at a US base at
Guantanamo, Cuba.
"In general terms, the reasons detainees may be
released are based on the nature of the continuing threat they
may pose to US security," the Pentagon said in a statement
yesterday.
The men were returned to their native countries on November 21.
"Senior leadership of the Department of Defence, in consultation with other senior US government officials, determined that these detainees either no longer posed a threat to the United States or no longer required detention by the United States."
"At the time of their detention, these enemy combatants posed a threat to US security."
"Additionally, approximately 20 detainees arrived at Guantanamo from the us central command area of responsibility on November 23, so that the number of detainees at (Guantanamo) is approximately 660," the statement said.
