New Delhi, June 12: Members of the Delhi cabinet have written to Chief Election Commissioner J M Lyngdoh alleging that BJP through its Central government, was removing slum clusters in the capital with a view to destabilising the voter demography and urged him to order banning of such activities till the upcoming assembly polls. "The removal of jhuggis is part of a planned exercise that aims at creating political advantages for a particular political party, in this case the BJP, through blatant misuse of state power and government machinery," the letter signed by Chief Minister Shiela Dikshit and her six cabinet colleagues alleged. The ultimate aim is to disenfranchise the nearly 20 to 30 lakh voters settled in these clusters and who are perceived to be voters of the Congress party, it claimed. Terming the razing exercise as inhumane, the letter said it was violative of Supreme Court guidelines, which makes it essential to provide for alternative resettlement plan with basic civic amenities before such relocation exercises can be undertaken. Urging the CEC to take a serious view of the situation, it requested him to ban the alleged demolitions, at least till the polls, so that no political party is allowed to gain advantage from it.
