Kabul, Dec 04: Afghan Police and international
peacekeepers have arrested at least two suspected terrorists
here, officials said today.
Kabul Police, with assistance from troops of the
5,000-strong international security assistance force that
patrols the Afghan capital, arrested three people early
yesterday, an ISAF statement said.
Two were suspected members of Hizb-e-Islami, a militant group led by renegade Afghan warlord Gulbuddin Hekmatyar. The identity of the third person was not immediately released.
Hizb-e-Islami "is a terrorist group, with a history of terrorist atrocities, and represents a threat against the people of Kabul and Afghanistan,'' the statement said.
ISAF said the arrests occurred in the city's north on a road heading toward Bagram, where the United States headquarters its military in Afghanistan. It gave no indication of whether those arrested were suspected of planning attacks.
Tension is high in Kabul ahead of the Loya Jirga, or grand council, expected to convene next week to debate and ratify Afghanistan's new constitution. Bureau Report
