Guwahati, Dec 01: Armed villagers in Assam's Kamrup district today killed a senior army officer and a jawan mistaking them to be militants triggering reprisal in which six villagers were shot dead and eight injured by the army personnel, police sources here said.

A patrol party of the Assam regiment was going to Barkhala for a raid when people of Athyapra Deharkuria under Hajo police station attacked them mistaking them to be militants, killing a major and a jawan on the spot, they said. The other defence personnel present quickly retaliated by gunning down six of the attackers and injuring eight.

The injured have been admitted to a hosptial here, the sources said. Senior police officials have rushed to the site and investigations were on. Bureau Report
