Chasing Australia's target of 490 runs in the fourth innings of the pink-ball first Test at Gabba, Pakistan were in a precarious position.

In the 75th over, the 39-year-old played a strange shot off the third ball bowled by Nathan Lyon.

His reverse seep ended with an easy catch at first slip, taken by Steve Smith.

Australians were five-and-half overs away from taking the new pink ball and his dismissal hastened the fall of Pakistani wickets.

From 173/5 in 74.3 overs, Pakistan ended the penultimate day's play at 382/8 from 123 overs.

Asad Shafiq's unbeaten 100 has delayed the inevitable for a night.

“That is ridiculous. That is so irresponsible,” the former fast bowler said on Channel Nine, as quoted by Cricket Australia on Sunday.

“A man with so much experience, you don’t need to do that. ‘What was the need? Pakistan needed you to be out there and you’ve played a false shot. Yeah, he’s got 65 but a very poor shot.”

“I’m concerned about how Younis played,” Waqar said.

“Two balls before, the ball had landed in the rough and spun sharply, the extra bounce was there. Then this… he was not in control at all. And I’m lost for words. Ridiculous,” he added.
