Root's terrific innings was brought to an end by Jasprit Bumrah, who knocked the middle stumps with a good length delivery while the England skipper was batting at 121. Riding on Root's brilliant knock and some solid contributions by other England batsmen, the hosts finished the second day on 423/8 and have attained a lead of 345 runs.

If Root decides to continue with the England innings, then Craig Overton along with Ollie Robinson will kick-off the proceedings on Day 3. Overton is playing on 24, while Robinson is yet to open his account after facing six balls so far.

The day started with Mohammed Shami breaking the opening stand between Rory Burns and Haseeb Hameed, who kicked-off the proceedings from their overnight score of  120/0. The Indian seamer cleaned up Burns on 61 and after his dismissal Dawid Malan joined Hameed in the middle. The pair showed some resistance and added 24 runs for the second wicket before Ravindra Jadeja outfoxed Hameed in his first over to dismiss on 68.

Malan was the third man to depart but he will surely be content with his show, considering the World no 1 T20 batsman was making a comeback to red-ball cricket after a long gap. Malan, who scored 70 on his return, was dismissed by Mohammed Siraj after the batsman nudged a ball going down the leg stick straight into Rishabh Pant's gloves right before Tea.

As wickets kept tumbling, Root remained firm in the crease and helped England take complete control in the contest. While Root kept fetching run from one end and went on to slam yet another ton, Shami struck twice in quick succession to remove Jonny Bairstow and Jos Buttler from the middle.

Root's fine innings was then brought to end by Bumrah and following the dismissal Jadeja removed Moeen Ali on 0, thus inflicting the seventh blow on England. Sam Curran, who was dismissed on duck in both the innings in the previous encounter at Lord's, opened his account in Leeds but was sent back on 15 by Siraj.

Meanwhile, India after a poor display in the opening day are trying hard to make ammends and bounce back in the contest. Burns along with Hameed kicked-off the action on Day 2 from the overnight score of 120/0. Burns then was batting on 52, while his partner was playing on 60.

India were outplayed in both the departments of the game on Day 1 with veteran pacer James Anderson leading the charge. He provided three crucial breakthroughs in the form of KL Rahul, Cheteshwar Pujara, and India captain Virat Kohli as the tourists were bundled up for 78 in their first inning.
