It happened in the penultimate over of the Banagladesh innings, when the 33-year-old removed Mushfiqur Rahim, Mashrafe Mortaza and Mehedi Hasan Miraz off successive deliveries.

Electing to bat first, the visitors post a good total of 176/9 in their allotted 20 overs despite the late slump at R Premadasa Stadium, Colombo.

Malinga's figures read 4-0-34-3. And the hat-trick was his fourth hat-trick in international cricket.

Malinga thus joined a select group of five bowlers to have hat-tricks in T20Is. Others are Brett Lee, Jacob Oram, Tim Southee and Thisara Perera.

He is scheduled to join Indians on Friday for the 2017 edition of Indian Premier League.
