Vijay Hazare Trophy: MCA sends showcause notice to Suryakumar Yadav over retweet controversy
Suryakumar Yadav has been under the scanner on disciplinary grounds even in the past. He was sacked as Mumbai captain during 2014-15 season after players complained of him being disrespectful towards his teammates.
New Delhi: The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) senior selection committee on Tuesday left out star batsman Suryakumar Yadav from the team's 14-man squad for upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy. The committee headed by Milind Rege, kept the 15th member’s slot vacant for the next 24 hours after MCA sent a notice to Yadav seeking explanation on a retweet.
MCA has asked Yadav to show cause for retweeting a post on Twitter that questioned his omission from the team for the Inter-state T20 tournament. Yadav, who retweeted a post from a veteran Mumbai columnist about his omission, has also been asked to appear before the MCA's managing committee.
"Players are not allowed to comment on selection on social media," MCA joint-secretary Unmesh Khanvilkar told ESPNcricinfo. "We have a managing committee meeting tomorrow where we will discuss what to do. We have called him [to appear before the committee] and have also sought a written explanation. Yesterday, I told him to give the written explanation within 24 hours so he can do that today. The committee will review his written explanation and then we will think what is to be done."
Yadav has been under the scanner on disciplinary grounds even in the past. He was sacked as Mumbai captain during 2014-15 season after players complained of him being disrespectful towards his teammates.
Last year as well, he was let go with a verbal warning for questioning Jay Bista's exclusion from Mumbai's squad for the semifinals and final on Twitter.
MCA named Aditya Tare as the skipper of Mumbai team for the inter-state one day limited over league to be played in Chennai from February 25.
Dhawal Kulkarni, who has been out of action since the league stage of Ranji Trophy, has found his way back into the team. Prithvi Shaw, the 17-year-old who hit a stupendous century in the Ranji Trophy semifinal and followed it up with a half-century in the final, has also been selected in the side.
Mumbai squad for the first three games: Aditya Tare (Captain), Abhishek Nayar, Shreyas Iyer, Siddhesh Lad, Akhil Herwadkar, Prithvi Shaw, Shivam Dube, Sufiyan Shaikh, Dhawal Kulkarni, Shardul Thakur, Shivam Malhotra, Pravin Tambe, Aditya Dhumal, Vijay Gohil.
Mumbai will play its first game against Gujarat on February 25.
